Some travelers are not content simply to enjoy affordable travel via cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages.  A select few try to smuggle contraband onto planes in hopes of a big score once they reach their destinations. On September 1st a man tried to board a flight going from Miami to Brazil with bags of exotic snakes and tortoises hidden inside his pants. The man was stopped by security personnel after passing through a full body scanner at the Miami International Airport.  Apparently he did not realize that the scanner would show the nylon bags he was hiding filled with seven snakes and three tortoises. The animals were taken by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife.  The unidentified smuggler was arrested. This is not as isolated an example as one might think.  Recently an Arizona man stole several baby albino boa constrictors from a pet store and stuffed them in his shorts. Police reviewed July 30th surveillance footage from Predator’s Reptile Center in Mesa which showed a 22 year old man entering the store, taking several snakes out of their cage, and placing them in a pocket of his shorts before leaving without paying. Once the suspect left the pet store he proceeded to another pet store where he exchanged several of the snakes for $175 and a large reptile tank.  A witness wrote down his license plate and then notified the police which used it to locate Eric Fiegel who was arrested Tuesday, August 30th. Maybe some travelers previously concerned about full body scanners will rest a little easier knowing that they can detect hidden reptiles when someone is attempting to smuggle them onto a plane.
